Personal Creation - Steve

Not sure if this counts...but it is a bunch of photos of something I created :)

Food and treats are the only things I ever really make.  Sadly, this is the latest capture I have lately.

Luke- Age

These pictures were taken at the Alaska Fair. Mckay and I were having fun taking some hip shots of random people. I'm not too experienced in editing but I just used the "enhance" option in i-photo. The first one I played around with the exposure and contrast because it was hard to see her face due to the lighting. Oh yeah, and I chose "age" as the theme because I work with elderly folks.

Age - McKay

I liked the facial expression and wrinkles of this woman.
Luke pointed out the unique juxtaposition of the second picture.  Tortoises generally represent an old age, whereas kids and strollers represent youthfulness or a young age.

Age - Steve

When the word age is mentioned, I normally think of something old.  It that context I've noticed that aged goods are either taken care of or they are neglected.  I have yet to see any in between.

I've come across many classic cars in Alaska, some have been well maintained while others have been left to rot.  It really is a shame :(

Scott - Random

The first picture was achieved by using Photoshop's "photo-merge" tool. The other two are just...random.

Random - McKay

The first picture is at Kincaid.  I liked the reflections and the clouds.
The second picture was taken a couple winters ago.  It was just a group shot of my friends, but I thought it came out nice.  I cropped out my date to just get my married friends in this picture.

Random Photos From Valdez - Steve

Since there is no theme this week, I decided to share some captures from my Valdez adventure from a couple of weeks ago.  The bear was the highlight...it was super cute! ^_^

Any thoughts or suggestions for improvement ?

Contrast - McKay

This is another self portrait; I was trying to get a picture that really showed the contrasting light so for this picture, I changed it to black and white and increased the contrast.

Scott Soule: Contrast

"Through the Light"

I didn't have a chance to shoot this week so I stole I shot I took last month in Rexburg. But I took it with the same objective in mind, capturing contrast. I felt black and white helped display the intensity of the contrast. I had to use my hand as a camera hood to block unwanted light flares.

Contrast- Burtie

The picture that I really wanted to take was a close-up of an old lady holding a toddler, with the contrast between old and young really showing in their faces with the wrinkles vs. smooth skin. However, my stalking efforts at the local park did not pay off. So my next thought was light vs. dark. Lucky for me, when I went home to Utah for the weekend, there was a beautiful lightning storm in the valley. I took this picture at about 10:00 PM, with an aperture of 4.6 and shutter speed of 1/15 s. I like the contrast you can see between the dark clouds and the lightning, but also between the darkness of the right side of the photo versus the left side, where the sun was just setting and there were not the ominous thunderclouds.

The greatest contrasts are found in nature:
color, shapes, texture, life. here's the raw:

Contrast Assignment - Steve Young

When I think of contrast, I mostly think of white and black.  Total opposites.

There are many things that can distract us in this world, it is a busy place.  I find myself playing video games, reading adventure stories, or doing other things that are probably not the best use of my time.

I was reading through the New Testament this week and part of this verse stuck out at me while trying to think this assignment through.

John 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

There is a lot of darkness in this world, but we are privileged to have access to the light as well.

Panhandling - Steve

It is very sad all of the homeless in this town. What is even sadder is how they react when you don't give them money.

A friend built a care package that had clean wool socks (was winter after all) and protein bars. They were literally thrown back into her face because they "asked for money".

This character showed his colors to me as I walked by.

Photojouralism - Scott Soule

Twirl
I photographed my cousins wedding last weekend and I tried to capture the feeling of how family get-togethers are in my family.

Journalistic Photo - McKay

Title: Sacrifice

Some elements I like about this picture:
The lady in the picture is almost out of the picture... almost as if she is being overlooked. The picture is also a bit crooked; to me this kind of represents the disarray of what is going on.

The Story: From looking at this woman, you can see that she is quite sad. She is pregnant and crying. She has a wedding ring and a phone that makes it look like she has been talking to someone. The story seems to point toward a tragedy or misfortune in her family. You can't help but want to sympathize and comfort her.

I took this at the air show over the weekend and have no idea who this person was. In fact, I was not fully aware of what is going on in this picture because for this shot I kind of held the camera sideways and just took random shots. I think at the moment this was taken, the announcer was reading a poem or talking about something to do with remembering our veterans.

Photojournalism - Curtis

The goal was to take a picture that told a story. Using a fisheye lens, I was hoping to capture a little bit of what's been going on here in the Cook Inlet Singles Ward. Elder Rasband and his new companion Elder Coleman usually teach Crystal (a newly baptized member) in the park, but because it was raining, they came over to my place instead. In this picture they are listening to her insights on 1 Nephi 16 as she reads from the new set of scriptures they gave her last Sunday.

Journalism - Cody

me: "Hey Cohan, we're gonna stop in Girdweed for some gas, right?"

Cohan: "Nah, we have a quarter-tank left. I think we'll be good. We'll just stop in Girdwood on the way back from Hope."

one hour later...

Cohan: "Dude, I don't think we're gonna make it to Hope and back. We're on empty. Are you sure there's not a gas station in Hope?"

me: "Pretty sure, man."

photo #1: We're not gonna make it! (cropped and darkened slightly in picasa)

Max Speaks - Blair

The best stories in my life come from my family. Last Sunday my extended family and I gathered for a baby blessing. The picture below is my favorite story from the party. I think Max speaks for him self.

Escape from Reality - Curtis

Strumming stress goodbye. I've been playing around with the F-stop and this one was taken at f/5.6

My favorite way to lose myself is in a crossword puzzle. Used a tripod and the timer to get this.

By far, my favorite way to run from reality is to run. Used a bucket to prop up the camera and played with the manual mode to decrease the shutter speed and depth of field. Then I played around in Picasa to focus the color on where I was headed.

Escape - McKay

Preface to pictures:
Although I didn't really get all of the shots I was hoping to for this week's topic, it was certainly easy for me to think of ideas. Turns out there are heaps of things that help me destressify my life. Immediately after photo club last week, I went to Carl's Jr to take a pictures of my 39 cent ice cream. From there I went to park night to take pictures of Ultimate Frisbee. There also happens to be a field of daisies where we play Ultimate. It is good to know that here in Alaska escaping from reality is as simple as... being in Alaska.

Title: Surfer Girl

Last night I hiked the turnagain arm. It was a beautiful day and finally sunny after days of rain. I took a picture of the ocean because the ocean is one of my absolute favorite places to be. Hiking is one of my favorite activities. I like how you can still see mountains in the distance. It is not like looking out into the ocean with just water, but in this view you can see more endless adventures waiting to happen.

Title: Future Joy of Being Married: No Guy Roommates

Ever Saturday I wake up at 6:00 to do my grocery shopping. This Saturday I found out that my roommates would be gone fishing all day so I knew that when I got home from shopping I could have the kitchen all to myself. I spent the next 4 hours cleaning up after my roommates and cooking my favorite pizza. Three escapes in one: Cleaning(more correct: having a clean place),cooking and pizza!

Title: Alaskan Weed (not that kind of weed)

I love flowers. Daisies are my favorite flower. Every time I go driving or go on a hike my mind is absolutely blown with the fact that daisies grow as weeds here. Every time I look at these flowers, my day seems a bit better no matter how stressful or terrible a day I have had.

Escape from reality- Layne

Those moments-the ones where an action, an event, an object, takes you from one world to another-are magical. When I need that moment I look up to the sky and let everything flow out of my mind. Instead I focus on what I see upwards. I took this picture through the sunroof of the car on our drive down to Utah- the drive that compelled me to look up and have a moment or go insane. I just cropped it a bit but I liked it in its original colors and shadows. simple.

The box of toys is from my dad's youth (going through our stuff at grandma's has provided ample escapes from reality). Each object has a memory, a fast escape route to neverneverland. I took the box outside to get natural light, then warmed the colors to show age.

Escape from Reality- Burtie

The title of this one is "The 4th F"... to be explained at photo club.
This picture combines my escape from reality with my guilty pleasure. When I am stressed, I go grocery shopping. Preferably late at night when it isn't as crowded and I can just wander along singing to the songs playing from the speakers and imagining all the wonderful meals I can make with the abundance of food I'm surrounded by :). An hour or two later, all my troubles are seemingly gone!
I actually took this picture with my point and shoot camera because I had some difficulties transferring the pics from my SLR to my computer. I used photoshop to edit the picture to look like the shot from my SLR. I then separated the picture into two layers, changed the background to black and white and voila!

Escape From Reality - Cody

...tempo rubato...
my most meaningful and failproof escape: music. i love a lot of things, but nothing takes away the stress and fear like sitting at the piano and just playing what i feel. singing. listening. all provide me with an escape from reality. i wasn't quite sure how to capture this in a photo. the only thing that kept coming to mind were the shots you always see in church videos...the ones that highlight a passage of scripture up close. that's what i had in mind when i took to this piece of sheet music using the black/white and macro settings on my canon digital elph. i'll call this one "tempo rubato" for obvious reasons. don't you all think we should come up with a title for each photo we submit? just an idea...
